Hiring a Nanny is a big decision because this person becomes part of your home and directly impacts your child’s development and daily routine. The most important thing to consider is fit-not just qualifications, but personality, values, and caregiving style. A great Nanny should align with your parenting approach (discipline, routines, communication) and make both you and your children feel comfortable, safe, and supported. Experience matters too, especially with the specific age group of your children, along with strong references that confirm reliability, trustworthiness, and consistency over time.
Clearly define the role in advance-duties, schedule, salary, overtime expectations, and whether housekeeping is included-to avoid misunderstandings. It’s also important to discuss communication (daily updates, boundaries, phone use) and expectations around flexibility. Finally, trust your instincts: even if someone looks perfect on paper, the right nanny should feel like a natural and dependable fit for your family’s day-to-day life.

Does the Nanny seem to really love and connect with children? Does she love being a Nanny?
Does the Nanny communicate well with children? Does she uses appropriate language and get down on their eye level? Do the children respond well to the Nanny?
It is very important to hire a Nanny that has good sense of humor and a positive attitude therefore this will be reflected to your children
Is she knowledgeable concerning children’s health issues including common childhood illnesses?
Does the Nanny demonstrate an understanding of children’s developmental stages - especially the stages your children are in and are moving toward?
Can the Nanny give examples of age appropriate activities that she will do with your children? Do these activities meet the emotional, social, intellectual and physical needs of your children? Can the Nanny outline a typical day’s schedule for you that will meet these needs?
Does the Nanny have relevant child care experience?
Will the Nanny follow your parenting guidelines? Will you respect and appreciate her professional opinions?

Does the Nanny have the ability to plan and prepare nutritious, balanced snacks and meals? Is the Nanny reliable, responsible, nurturing and professional? Does the Nanny display the kind of maturity needed to do the job you are asking of her?
Do you match expectations in regards to salary, hours, job duties and other basics?
Has there been a complete background and employment screening? This should include a criminal background check, driving records check and reference screenings.
Have you disclosed all relevant information to the Nanny about your family and what you are looking for in a caregiver? Does the Nanny seem comfortable with all that you have shared?
Personally Interview the Nanny
Conducting a personal interview with any Nanny you are considering is extremely important. An interview allows you to evaluate not only the candidate’s qualifications but also their personality, communication style, and compatibility with your family.
Whenever possible, it is helpful to conduct the interview in the presence of your children and a trusted family member. Observing how the Nanny interacts with your children can provide valuable insight into whether the relationship will be comfortable and natural.
If everyone involved in the interview feels positive about the Nanny, it may be a good sign that the candidate is a suitable fit. However, if anyone feels uncertain or uneasy after the meeting, it is often best to continue your search.
Human instinct plays an important role in decision-making. Even when a candidate has an excellent background and strong references, that alone does not always guarantee they will be the right match for your family. Trust your instincts and the instincts of those close to you when making the final decision.
Children, in particular, often have a natural ability to sense warmth and friendliness. Pay attention to how your child responds to the Nanny during the interview. If your child seems uncomfortable or unable to connect with the candidate, it may be wise to consider other options.
Ultimately, the goal is to choose a Nanny who makes both you and your children feel safe, comfortable, and supported.
